Today is Kit day! Kit is when you work in a 3D workshop where you can build things, weld things ect. Today's assignment was create anything out of a selected few materials the touters supplied to us. Then we used the tools in the workshop to build a sculpture.
For my sculpture I'm cutting wavy pieces of wood and building a pyramid with them then I'm adding a circle on top and attach a web to the side. For the circular piece of metal I wanted to create interesting colours so I took a blow torch and heated the surface. After cutting the frame for my web I realised that the elastic bands may cause too much tension so I'm thinking about cutting it up into triangles and wedging them together to snake to the top of my pyramid. Or create delicate details like another girl in my class did. I thought her squares look beautiful.
I learnt so much today, mostly about how to use the machines. I leaned how to cut wood safely and how to use a blow torch. Wearing all the equipment and building and designing the piece made me feel powerful. Traditionally something like woodshop is meant for boys but today everyone got to make and create things with their hands.
I'm starting to realise that I really enjoy building things. I'm not sure why I enjoyed this more than the architecture workshop but I did. So at least now I know that I'm not going to become an architect.
