Today we worked together in a group of 6 and our assignment was to look at a poem and turn it into an installation piece. Our poem was Queen and Countress. We interperated that the poem was actually about the Moon. The tone of the poem was ominous and so we held a group meeting the day before on what we could do to represent this poem in a sculptural piece. We decided on collecting numerous transparent items and lights. We cam back the next day with bubble wrap, bin bags, plastic sheets, plastic bags, lamps, flashlights ect. We also made a ring out of plastic tubing and a recording of Anastasia (one of our team mates) resiting the poem played backwards with owls playing over.
We started by hanging up the ring by a skylight and blocking the outside of the ring with black bin bags. We then started attaching pieces of plastic together with transparent tape and hanged it from the ring. We found that though it looked eerie, it also looked impature. So we started cutting semi-opaque plastic bags and taping it together to make one giant sheet. We then hanged it around the ring, covering the messy pieces, so that you can only see faint silouhettes of abstract shapes. We then began by adding some lights and the audio. Our pice was largely sculptural but totally amazing.
Our team worked well together. Anastasia took the lead since most of the idea was hers, but she left enough room to ask us about what we thought about the sculpture or certain aspects, so everyone contributed something creative to this piece. WE also worked collaboratively physically, attaching and cutting plastic, as well as foraging for materials. Some of us would hang things, or buy things. Louis did the pyrotechnics. It was like a well oiled machine. But I think it only worked because we all liked the idea, and Anastasia was a good leader. She was intimidating but not a dictator, so kept a good balance.
