For game deign we talked about the different types of games that there are, such as board games, PC games, iPad/phone games, console games etc. Then we did an exercise where we were given two random cards with words on them and had to come up with a concept idea for a game.
It was awesome to be able to think up an entire world with characters and complex stories and the type of adventures they could go on. My two cards were Bird and Vampire, I came up with the idea that it was a console game where it is basically angels vs. demons in a post apocalyptic 1950's film noir type.
After lunch we picked the 4 best game concepts and develop the idea more. We haas to come up with story lines, landscape and character designs, what the player might be doing in the game. I really enjoyed the group that I chose because I loved the concept and it sparked many ideas. The story was that there is this guy who lands up in an Asylum but has no idea how he gets there. In one of his therapy sessions he falls asleep and thinks that he wakes up again in the Asylum but soon realises that he is stuck in his own twisted mind. He has to battle out these monster, each representing some sort of mental demon that represents a disease like depression or anxiety. In the intervals of all of these, the player receives flashbacks of his life and you can piece together what happened to him. In the end he wakes up, slayed all of his problems and is able to leave the Asylum and reunite with his daughter.
Obviously working together did bring some problems, like what the horrible thing was that happened to him, but all in all we worked well together and came up with interesting ideas.
I like the idea of coming up with short stories and elaborate scenarios. It's a lot like coming up with a movie idea but makes it more real with the fact that someone can interact with it.
